does what it says on the tin! a fun and lighthearted witchy sapphic romance with lots of cheese and not that much charisma. didn’t love the characters nor did I think they had chemistry but the magic was cool!

Seemed like a cute premise, but the plot felt needlessly complicated and drawn out. I wanted more fake dating, but after a while it becomes all about the miscommunication, which is often my least favorite part of romances.

This book was funny and feel good and I really loved how protective Morgan and Rory were over each other. Morgan was the most delusional main character but I loved her anyway, even despite her questionable actions at times (but like, not in a morally grey manner, just a “are we sure this is the best idea?” type manner). If you’re looking for a sweet, witchy read, definitely pick this one up.

The most relatable thing about Morgan is that she truly thought Rory must be under a LOVE POTION in order for Rory to have feelings for her. Like girl was CONVINCED with ZERO PROOF that she accidentally gave Rory a love potion.

I’m so sorry but I’m about to be mean.

Most of the time I don’t trust or pay attention to Goodreads ratings but I can see why this book has a 3.5 average. This Spells Disaster read like fanfiction and not in a good way. I should have known when I saw this was blurbed by Ali Hazelwood but silly me was holding out hope. I don’t mind when a book has fanfic style writing. In fact, I tend to enjoy the tone and usually have a fun time. This however, was not that.

First of all I thought the plot was fucking convoluted. I wasn’t sold on the reason behind the fake dating. It just felt like the author wanted to write fake dating so she threw something together. This was one of the flimsiest rationales I’ve ever read. The whole love potion storyline was also so stupid I’m sorry. It added absolutely nothing to this book besides an infuriating miscommunication plot line.

Speaking of the miscommunication plot line, my god. Have I ever encountered a character as annoying as Morgan? I will say, I did like her in the beginning. But Jesus Christ. You are twenty five years old. If you believe you gave the woman you’re in love with a love potion, tell her. Do not create hair brained schemes to make her hate you. And of course, every time Morgan does shit to try and get Rory to dislike her, it always backfires! Because she’s just soo quirky and cute and unknowingly does all the right things despite crossing Rory’s boundaries. For a good chunk of this book I had to endure Morgan being shitty to Rory, who of course is always the one apologizing and telling Morgan that she’s right. Morgan’s self-deprecating attitude is also insufferable. Yes, you fucked up. Apologize and own it. Be a fucking adult. The immaturity constantly got on my nerves.

Additionally, I could have seen the reveal that Rory actually never ingested the potion coming from a mile away. This is supposed to a fun little romcom so predictability is expected and I usually would not hold that against the book, but add it to everything else and it is a crime that will not be forgiven.

This one had so much potential and I really thought I was going to have fun with it. Instead it was a mess.
