I think the "angst" section could be tightened up a bit but overall a powerful and worthy read about the immigrant experience in this time.
Flawed, real characters — such a memorable mother and son. I love the thread this adds to the tapestry of immigrant fiction.
It's been a while since I've read a book as well written as this. It pulls you in and makes you stay awake reading until your eyes become dry. The characters are exposed when they need to be and I found myself lost in this world.
I love reading books like this because it widens my perspective on others in the world. I definitely recommend this read.

Very current in its subject matter and captures Mother son relationship in an interesting way. Good read. Also nice the way the Mom reflects on the choices she made and the resulting consequences.
read on Nov 11 Ñ didn't realize was more young adult lit but still mostly enjoyable. Some really poignant moments, but also sometimes felt more aspirational, like Ko was trying to check a set number of political boxes / make overarching points that sometimes came at the expense of my reading. Maybe this is biased from 1) knowing about the deportation (which is supposed to be a big reveal?) before reading the novel and also 2) from a lukewarm review from a trusted reader. still enjoyable but probably will not reread anytime soon
A woman on the train asked me what I thought of the book when I was about halfway through and I gave her a sleepy "meh" response. Recommended Lucky Boy if you're looking for your next book on cultural custodial concerns. But then I learned what the book was really about as I kept reading it, and I will keep my eyes open for her on the train again so I can recommend this one as well.
