A 2-star rating, for me, means I can see what other readers might enjoy about this book, but it wasn't for me.
Reading this for the first time in my 20s was a wild experience. Obviously, I'm nowhere near the target age range anymore. Even so, I can see how younger audiences may find this series amusing, but man, Greg Heffley is such a weird main character. I find it so interesting that the author chose to present a main character like him. He's so narcissistic and shameless throughout the entire book. I think readers are meant to find him amusing while understanding that his actions are wrong. Maybe it's the times we're in, or I severely underestimate young readers (I really hope it's the latter), but I don't know if most readers within the target audience would understand that about Greg's character. Who knows... maybe I'm overthinking things.
Overall, this is a very quick read with an easy-to-follow writing style that's enhanced with doodles/images. It's really low-stakes, "slice-of-life" oriented. This book also feels like such a product of its time. There are plenty of references to things like Saturday morning cartoons that many current generations wouldn't wholly understand. However, I think the focus on Greg doing everything he can to be popular, or at least not get teased, is something everyone can relate to.

Kinney masterfully depicts Arendt’s concept of the banality of evil through middle schooler Greg Heffley. Cold, calculating, and self absorbed, Heffley lacks both a spine and moral compass. He is willing to do whatever it takes to scale the social hierarchy, even if it means putting those he calls his friends in harm’s way. Greg’s machinations resemble less a preteen grappling with their place in the world, instead rivalling the powers struggles of Stalin.
Re-read, for like the 1415483th time.
Still funny.
