queer, gorgeous and intricate and so so meaningful.

i've read Deepest Darkest Red by Anna-Marie McLemore. it was good, but didn't hit me anywhere near as hard as Mirror Season.

Lock and Ciela's tale of sexual assault was told in a truthful and intricate way, their relationship not forced and seen as the "solution" to their trauma. the magical realism adds to what feelings are occurring, to how painful trauma is and how it follows you.

idk how to explain my thoughts further, but read this. yeah

Honestly, I didn't think I would even read this book when I first heard what it was about. Dual sexual assaults, and reading about them in 2021? Not sure I can handle that. But this book is both heartbreaking and beautiful. I read it in almost one sitting, I had trouble putting it down. What happens to Ciela and Lock is horrifying, yet McLemore never leaves us without hope.

EVERYONE GO READ THIS BOOK. It tore me apart and put me back together in all the best ways a book can. I went into this almost completely blind as to what it was about and that is what I recommend for everyone reading it. Just a content warning that this is a book that deals with sexual assault and serious topics so if that's something you aren't interested or capable of reading maybe skip this, but I truly believe that there's something in this story for almost everyone and it's such an important story to be told.

"You can make me quiet but you can't make me forget."

Anna-Marie McLemore is one of those authors who's been on my radar for years but whose books never seemed quite the right fit for me. But The Mirror Season was perfect. It's raw and emotional and the way McLemore wove my favourite fairy tale, The Snow Queen, through the story was magnificent. A beautiful story.

Warnings: references to sexual assault and PTSD, experiences of racism and misogyny, explorations of rape culture.

The writing is gorgeous. Took me a very long time to get through, simply because the subject matter (sexual assault) and the style (magical realism) both require me to be in a certain mood to read and that mood is elusive. So I can’t say that I loved it, but I can say that I think it is an important book that will resonate with its readers. And again, the writing is beautiful.
