In what he claims to be his last case before retiring from the DCPD, Detective Alex Cross helps his longtime friend and partner John Sampson investigate the case of Sampson's old Vietnam buddy Sergeant Ellis Cooper who was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to death by lethal injection by the U.S. Army. However, Cooper proclaims his innocence up to the final moments when he is executed. Now, to clear his name, Cross and Sampson decide to continue their investigation and discover that he, among many others, were set up by three former Army assassins who go by the nickname of the Three Blind Mice. Very suspenseful and fast moving book which is the trademark of Patterson. However, it seems that Cross' character is really starting to get a little tired and he should really be retired by Patterson entirely.

I enjoyed this story, but I didn't get the oomph that I've gotten from other stories. The "twist" was pretty predictable, but I did enjoy getting to know Alex a little better

This series continues to be rivetting 5 star reading.  Hoping to retire from the police and lead a safer, quieter life, Alex is drawn into a series of murders no-one even seem to acknowledge have happened. Determined to make this his last case is there a danger it could be the last of Alex Cross?
