This was just fun and had me guessing until the very last page.
The perfect murder mystery! If you love Agatha Christie, this is the one for you! I’ve read Lapena’s other work previously and enjoyed them, but this was great! Quite a few characters, but very easy to follow and discern. It has all the elements of a good whodunnit: same setting, sketchy characters, and murders – PLURAL!
This one reminds me why I love the genre so much, definitely recommend!

10 guests arrive at a cosy remote lodge for the weekend in the mountains. The blizzard outside is only getting worse and soon there is no power and no contact with the outside world. Then one by one the bodies start to mount. There is no one else who has arrived meaning one of the guests has to be the murderer but who?
A Agatha Christie style story. A enjoyable thriller that reminded me of other who done it books I’ve read.

An isolated country house hotel, conveniently cut off from civilisation & WiFi, hit by a freak snowstorm (& indeed freak ice) rendering the building also without power or light, all on the exact same day a group of random strangers, each with more emotional baggage than actual luggage, arrive to spend the weekend.
Not all of them survive to eat their Sunday breakfast.
Believable? Definitely not. Corny? A little. Enjoyable? Mostly.
This book did grow on me in so much as I enjoyed the Agatha Christie-esque style of it and I really wanted to know whodunnit (though I had guessed who by the penultimate chapter there is a nice little twist on the final page ). However, the writing seemed laboured in parts & the characterisation very linear with a lot of ‘information dumps’ rather than letting them tell their own story. It’s also a very similar style & plot to ‘The Hunting Party’ though I see that Shari Lapena wrote this first so I won’t use that as a criticism.
On the whole I enjoyed it a lot more than I expected to, helped in part by it being a relatively short read. Many sections were just too jumbled or dull to warrant more than 3* but definitely another one I would love to see as a film where the setting & plot could be really brought to life.

this is a good murder mystery. i love how the author skillfully tells the story from multiple characters' pov. it was like stepping into the minds of these characters.
however, the initial chapters were a bit overwhelming, as it felt like there were too many characters to keep track of. buttttttt, the author skillfully dropped subtle cues throughout the story that helped distinguish each character. over time, it became easier to connect the dots and decipher who was who.
while the plot twist may not have been earth-shatteringly complex, it was thoroughly satisfying. the story unfolded steadily, keeping me engaged.
if you're looking for a compelling modern mystery that keeps you on the edge of your seat, i highly recommend this book. it may not blow your mind, but it will certainly keep you entertained and satisfied.

3.5-4/5 ⭐ The first 50 pages were so painfully slow and boring, I thought this would be a 3 or 2.5 ⭐ But afterwards it got better. Still, so far my least favourite Shari Lapena book.
Great read. Fun plot. Reads like an Agatha Christie.
Selected as part of a reading challenge (AI selection … I asked for books like ‘and then there were none’).
