This was interesting and - considering its setting - surprisingly fun. There wasn’t really a lineair story to this tho, so it felt more like a set of related anecdotes. Entertaining nonetheless (until it became a bit repetitive).

I love Macintrye's storytelling, this one did not disappoint. I flew through the 13 hours of audio.

This is probably as good as it gets (or will get) in terms of Colditz narratives. Taking great pains with a seemingly endless trove of written archival material and audio recordings as his research basis, Macintyre lays out the history of the castle that was turned into a supposedly escape-proof POW camp during WW2. He pulls information from first-hand accounts of the prisoners who tried (and some who succeeded) in escaping, as well as of the guards and leadership who tried (and mostly succeeded) in keeping the prisoners from escaping. Excellent book.

This was a very well-written, informative history that also managed to be interesting and engaging. The author did an incredible job at both researching the subject matter and portraying it on a way that was not like a stereotypical, boring textbook. Really fascinating examination of a little-known prison of WWII.

This was just great -- detailed, nuanced storytelling that picks apart a beloved historical episode (jolly boys together really show those nazis what for!) and lays out the fact and the fiction that exist within that episode side by side. I highly recommend to pretty much anyone, but especially the WWII dads(TM) out there.
