Beautifully written, exploring love, loss, music, and time. Makes you nostalgic for places you’ve never been to. Leaves you longing for more, more from the characters, more plot, more stories. I understand the limitations of the genre. Unlike a novel, these short stories don’t have a satisfying conclusion. They leave you just as quickly as they found you, but impressively, they leave an impression on you, and make you think about time, as a concept and as a personal experience. I’ve had this book by my bedside for a number of years, until finishing the last story today. You can pick it up, read a story, forget about it, and come back to it months later, after you’ve experienced some sort of loss in your own life. That’s what I liked about it. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea though.

As ever, beautifully written and evoked but I'm not sure how I feel about any of the male characters and how they feel about women. We're they all props? Was the casual dismissal intentional? Not that enjoyable for me!

This book happened. I read it. Yeah.

No one could be more surprised than me that I didn't love this book. I've read two of Ishiguro's novel prior to this, The Remains of the Day and The Buried Giant, which were both excellent, and I count The Buried Giant among the best books I've ever read. So when I saw this collection of short stories I added it to my list right away. And the title! Nocturnes! Music! Nightfall! Such poetry in the title alone. I thought for sure I'd love it, and come away with the same depth of feeling from these stories as I have from Ishiguro's other work.

To my surprise, I didn't find these stories to be anything special. The only one I really liked was the fifth of the five stories, Cellists. That one I can recommend. The others...I just didn't have a lot of empathy for the characters, didn't find their plights very believable, wasn't drawn into their worlds. On the whole the book was a quick, easy, and not unpleasant read, but not much more than that. Admittedly my expectations were high with this writer, but I don't think my opinion of these would change if they were from an author unknown to me. I still plan to read more of Ishiguro's work- maybe I just connect way more to his novels than his short stories?

i absolutely adored crooner and malvern hills, however the others weren’t so much my type.
