This is interesting to look at historically, but not as a work on its own.

There’s something awe-inspiring and humbling about reading a book written over 4000 years ago. Obviously its an epic, so we don’t get a ton or character development or world building obviously. But we can see the start of certain archetypes forming, inspiration for Homer and the basis for many Greek myths. There’s also a story that reads as a precursor for Adam and Eve and the great flood myth. The flood myth is also identical. One part mentions a meteor, which surprises me and means they probably found a crater hole at one point.
The most interesting part was Gilgamesh and Enkidu, were they lovers, brothers or friends? It says Gilgamesh loves him like a woman, so it’s implied. It most likely inspired Achilles and Patroclus and you can see the similarities.
I know that this is called a religious text, but it’s just as much a precursor to modern fantasy and later works.

In my opinion, "The Epic of Gilgamesh" is only a literary work that offers insights into ancient civilization. However, I see it soooo boring and distracting. The prose version may be repetitive and lacking in philosophical depth, the exploration of the pursuit of eternal life and the religious parallels adds layers of religious copying to the narrative.

It is a naive representation of ancient culture that's fit to be written on mud tablets. would have been a waste of papers.

We definitely got the fantasy books hero arcs from The Epic of Gilgamesh, also, the Akkadian names are so much easier to remember than the Sumerian names, however, it's quite obvious to decipher which family of languages they fall into based solely on pronunciation and similarity to other languages in their respective families.

Also...prehistoric bi (let's be honest they're more gay than bi) couple that didn't go around dating random women after they fell in love with each other?? HELL YES! (judging Achilles and Patroclus so hard right now)

For the record; I don't enjoy the lgtbq+ books but you can't avoid them in ancient texts, anyways! The Epic of Gilgamesh is not for the weak of mind who will say oh no this is similar to this bible/quranic story (like the flood story that repeats literally all over mankind's mythology and every religion)...let them be separate things folks, because they are!
