This was one of the better books in this series. The parallels between cases were excellent, it was well-paced, great historical detail, and good characterization. I couldn’t put it down.

I received this book in a Goodreads Giveaway and I love a good mystery. This book was ok. I didn’t hate it, but I found it predictable and hard to keep my attention. I’m not familiar with the series, but I’m sure if you enjoyed the other books, you’d enjoy this one. It works as a stand-alone book within the series. Occasionally there was some mention of something in the past that is probably told in earlier books, but nothing that had to be known to read this one.

The latest in the Ian Rutledge series is, as always, a remarkable and absorbing reading experience. I really zipped through this one, putting in a couple of late nights doing it.

When Ian is asked by a senior detective, Chief Inspector Leslie, to take a case to which he has been assigned, he is unable to do so because he has to appear at a hearing that day. Leslie undertakes the investigation of an unknown woman found dead near some prehistoric stones in the town of Avebury. She had been viciously stabbed and left at the foot of one of them. Leslie’s investigation does not find the killer. Inspector Markham who despises Rutledge assigns him the task of reviewing the investigation. Rutledge sees this as a trap. His letter of resignation is sitting in his superior’s drawer waiting for the right time.

This series continues to get better

1921 After solving a case in Shropshire,  Detective Inspector Rutledge is sent to Avebury as Chief Inspector Brian Leslie was unable to solve the murder of a female found in a ditch next to the stones. But can Rutledge.
Another well-plotted and entertaining historical mystery. A good addition to this well-written series with its likeable and interesting main character.
