"But where are you from, really?" Edugyan discusses the assumed statelessness of a woman born in Canada of Ghanian blood. She delves into the belief that Canadian Stories demand a certain structure and setting, lest they misrepresent our nation. She insists that Home is a construct, a place to believe in, as well as your place within it. What makes a story Canadian is its author, no matter how many generations they have lived on this land. Edugyan is opening the doors even further, hoisting the stopper, to ensure more and more stories that follow their own narrative are not only written, but accepted as an essentially Canadian tale.

Edugyan's short essay, transcripted from a speech she gave at the Henry Kreisel Memorial Lecture in Edmonton, Alberta in 2011. She relates stories of growing up in Calgary, studying at universities in the US and Germany, and visiting extended family in Ghana.

This speech was given around the release of her second novel, Half-Blood Blues. She discusses some of her research for the novel - Afro-Germans in the 1940s Nazi Germany - and her writing process.

This was a great little essay, but I definitely think I'll enjoy it more after reading [b:Half Blood Blues|11076123|Half Blood Blues|Esi Edugyan|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1309737674l/11076123._SY75_.jpg|15997604].

Esi thinks we live in a post-post-colonial age. Would fit well in a feel-good absence-of-tension TEDx talk.
