The third volume of Akira dials up the chaos and conflict. With Tetsuo seemingly destroyed by the space laser the hunt for Akira is on. Kaneda and Kei find him first in the rubble. But then the mysterious Lady Miyako (test subject #19) sends out one of her disciples called Sakaki, a girl that can move at incredible speeds. Meanwhile the colonel and his army and mister Nezu are also part of the hunt.

A race against the clock starts the different characters make their way through the city. With each betrayal Akira moves into the hands of the next person. With Ryu probably being the most kind to Akira.

They all end up together near the waterside of the city as Sakaki is killed off and mister Nezu bleeding to death at the hands of Ryu takes aim at Akira. But he misses and hits Takashi (test subject 27) instead. This finally unlocks Akira's powers and Neo-Tokyo is blown apart. In the wake a very much alive Tetsuo approaches Akira.

Volume 3 makes volume 2 feel like a walk in the park. The action never stops and it's brutal. Characters meet their demise and Neo-Tokyo is altered forever. Armageddon is close as nothing can seemingly stop Akira anymore. But with three volumes still left i can't wait to see how this unfolds. I am obsessed.

Faster paced than the first two volumes but just as good. Ends with an awesome cliffhanger.

Okay so I thought it wouldn’t be as strong as the second volume, considering how much of this volume is taken up by a game of hot potato with Akira. But good lord that ending. Holy mcjesus.

Third volume starts with Kaneda and Kei barely surviving the escape from military compound with Akira in tow. While trying to hide from the military their trust in their allies will be put to test. Who can be trusted in poisonous political environment? At the very moment when everything seems lost things get worst due to the stupid action of a man who cannot admit defeat. And then true cataclysm takes place.

Tetsuo is absent from this volume for almost entire run. Only at the end does he enter the scene and disappears with the most potent force on Earth. Volume truly ends on the cliffhanger.

Art is, as is always the case for this series, excellent. Framing of parts of Neo-Tokyo just bare minutes before the cataclysm is pure joy to follow, events playing out like on a movie screen. Level of details is incredible, families preparing for start of the day seconds before the disaster and then silent panels where buildings get reduced to ash and dust.... what to say but phenomenally done.

Highly recommended to all fans of SF.
