On page 102 of this volume, Chiyoko startles a man with a gun by throwing an inflatable lifeboat at him, darting behind the lifeboat, and punching him in the face through the rubber. As another man threatens her with a machine gun, Kaneda vomits all over his head, a useful distraction caused by his poisoning a few pages before.

This volume departs from the scope of the film "Akira," and it does so with style. Otomo draws like a movie, with great technical skill and an eye for dynamism. He also seamlessly mixes large-scale action with personal street-level movement. Characters of all kinds have memorable interactions while in the midst of military maneuvers and the resulting chaos. Otomo manipulates us through the story so well that we almost forget about Tetsuo's disappearance at the beginning of the volume.... Almost.
