It was quite ok. If I would have been 12 I would have probably given it 3.5 or 4 stars.
4.5/5 | Reading this story made me remember how much I love children's fantasy, and with the inclusion of greek/roman mythology, I was totally sucked in. I've never read the Percy Jackson series but I've watched the movie and this got me wanting to read more of this world. I was not disappointed, considering this book's target market is 10 to 14 year olds.
1. IT'S SO SUSPENSEFUL.
Like what how is there so much suspense in a children's book? My heart was pounding half of the time when Leo, Piper and Jason were running around and I thought someone was going to die. I want to mention specific scenes but that would be a spoiler. There are at least 3 moments when I thought the quest was going to all go to pieces. (Monocle Motors anyone?)
2. COOLEST MONSTERS.
I haven't read about such awesome monsters in a long time - they all played upon my childhood fantasies. Like a lightning horse that you ride into battle, COME ON! That's just amazing. And auras. And big giants. And having werewolves in this makes a lot of sense because of Romulus and Remus.
3. SIMILARITIES.
Sort of similar things happen to Jason etc. as to Percy in as much as I know about that storyline. We see a hypnotizing part, school field trip to start us off, lots of fighting, lots of running, and a learning about who they are while becoming confident young people placed in an absurd situation - ie. fighting for their life as a teenager. Having the characters at Camp Half-Blood gave me a sense of familiarity so I was feel like I already knew what their setting was like.
4. COMEDY
It's so funny, I just can't explain what made it so funny, but a lot of the comments cracked me up!
“Can we just call them storm spirits?” Leo asked. “Venti makes them sound like evil espresso drinks.”
I was able to figure out who the her is that everyone kept referring to about 1/3 of the way through, but even thinking that I knew that, I was still really excited to keep reading! I'm really glad to have watched Piper grow into a confident young lady and really start to excel at what she's good at. Leo definitely grew on me - that goofball. :P Jason is an okay lead, and it's tough to empathize with him sometimes as we don't really get to know him in depth because of the memory loss. As much as we can guess what he's done and what his background is (we can pretty much guess early on), we don't truly resonate with his experiences because he doesn't know either! I feel pretty bad for him though. :(
It made me feel inspired, and I wanted them to succeed as much as I was saying to myself, YEA, I make my own destiny! Because really, as Riordan wrote...“You must forge your own path for it to mean anything.”

the rest of the series is 5/5, this is 3 because jason and piper annoy me but they grew on me later
