Leo Valdez babyyy u were the love of my lifeeee woahhhhhh
I loved this book. It was a great opening to a new series. It still had same characters so you can relate to the story if you read the previous series. I like to see where this goes.
if you asked 12 year old me i probably would have given it 2 stars - all i remember is being mad that Percy wasn’t narrating and that Jason was a bad replacement (sorry pookie, i like you better at 24)
actually reading it not in a fit of rage this time though, good book!! i love piper sm and even though no percabeth, we did get lots of thalia content which im always happy by
anyways - i know this series will rip my heart out in the future but! for now im having a good time!!
“which meant his only assets were one whiny imprisoned goddess, one sort-of girlfriend with a dagger, and Leo, who apparently thought he could defeat the armies of darkness with breath mints”

This is my first behind the OG series! Lots of setup, and the third person is definitely a shock compared to first person. But I’m excited to see where it goes!

"He could barely tolerate what she'd said about their mom. It was almost likeThalia had handed him a baby and said, Here, this is yours. Carry it. He didn't want to carry it. He didn't want to look at it or claim it. He didn't want to know that he had an unstable motherwho'd gotten rid of him to appease a goddess ."
While the story itself is captivating and interesting to follow, I just cannot stand Piper's "not-like-other-girls"—ness (she hates dresses and make-up, guys! She cuts her hair uneven on purpose!) and obsession with Jason. We get it, she thinks he's super hot. Yeah yeah, being attractive and rich is a burden. Instead of writing her as an interesting character with layers, Riordan shrinks her to a girl who's beautiful and thinks femininity is annoying and/or stupid. Her being Native American does nothing, it's an atribute never given any depth. But you know what though? Jason is so cute and hot...
She also learns to fight out of nowhere and even Hera listens to her. Bruh
Jason's chapters also have an annoying tendency of describing how beautiful Piper is (he prefers her without make-up btw. You won't forget about it cause he will remind you multiple times) and how he wishes they'd kiss, although it's not as frequent. He's a bit boring but it can be forgiven, his story makes up for it.
I still love Leo, my goofy broken boy. But is he obsessed with pretty girls too? Oh yes he is. This is the curse of "The Lost Hero".
What we could definitely do without is another negatively portraited Asian character. Ethan Nakamura passes the baton to Drew in this one.
All in all, it's okay.
Minor: Grief, Death of parent, Fire/Fire injury
AMAZING. IT'S A MUST REED BOOK. But, you have to read Percy Jackson's series first to maybe understand the book BETTER ;)
*3.5 stars*
That, was a very impressive start on our new journey continuing from the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. Dare I say even better? maybe! it was a very enjoyable read from the start (at least better than my first experience of reading The Lightning Thief, but that's another story) I love all of the characters (except Ruby, she can just choke *joking*) and their personalities, and this new form of story-telling (by showing multiple POVs from main characters, though it was still from a 3rd person point of view) is fresh and thoroughly fun!
Jason, Piper, and Leo is our first set of new characters introduced for this new story. Jason is our supposed hero that had his memory erased (for reasons that you should look into yourself by reading, because it's sort of interesting) by something/someone, Piper is our very beautiful, charming, but anxious girl who has lived herself *accidentally* becoming a so called kleptomaniac even tho she never means too, and Leo (my favorite) is our very outgoing, likes to joke around, smiley cinnamon bun who is Jason's best friend, but a very emo fiery edge lord who has confidence issues within (yea, idk how to explain myself better). We follow them on their journey following the next Great Prophecy to try again and save the world (for real this time, perhaps) from destroying itself again, both literally and figuratively.
I don't know how Uncle Rick did it, but man, I laughed a lot in many points in this book, that it made my experience reading for the first time even better that what I expected. This book feels more YA-ish compared to the Percy Jackson series (I guess because the ages of the characters are older, and more chaos and peril is happening in this one?) and though some parts are very cringy, like how SO MANY times it was mentioned that Piper is not your usual type of girl and described many times in many different graphic detail of how "unpretty" she is, but Jason still sees her as the most magnificent thing in the universe, and how Leo's monologue sounds every time he falls for every hot out-of-his-league person/goddess, and also every time Coach Hedge talks. Aside from that, Jason and Piper did have a very steady improvement in their relationship and it wasn't really insta-lovey, with Jason basically is head over heels for her but feels utmost guilt because of the "issue" behind it (*spoiler* their whole relationship was the cause of the Mist *gasp*) and Piper is just drooling over Jason anytime and any day (ofc, that's not the only reason why she's into him) but can't get closer because of her fear that he might become somebody that she is afraid him to become. Leo is well ... as every three best friends trope, will be alone and a third wheeler, maybe until the middle of the book, and later finds himself his love of his life, maybe.
About the story, I think what made this whole prompt(s) and where this journey is going, is more captivating because I don't understand anything about the Greek and Roman gods and heroes. Okay, I DO understand probably a little, but that little is definitely not enough for me to make guesses on what's to come in this story, I didn't even know there was a hero named Jason before this! All in all, apart from not understanding tho, this can be a really good series, if you're into mythology and anything fantasy, with young gifted characters and strong friendship, very strong plot armor and a heck lot of dad jokes, you'll enjoy this!

Y 2. No. Soporto. A. Piper.

This was fantastic - I like Greek mythology but I find that I typically enjoy retellings/related books of mythologies that I'm not as familiar with, especially when they are presented in the Riordan style; it really just makes me want to explore the traditional myths more. I can already tell that I'm going to enjoy the way Riordan is weaving together Greek and Roman mythology throughout The Heroes of Olympus series.
