Uplifting, emotional, and thought-provoking, I was swept away by the words and the story, and I wish it hadn't ended. I didn't even realize how much time had past until I looked at the clock wondering why there weren't more pages in this story. The Black Flamingo explores themes of identity, race, and sexuality. There is so much feeling in the pages, I don't know how to express the emotions that I went through while reading this. Michael is trying to figure out who he is, and where he fits in the world. It starts with him as a young child, and follows him as he goes to university and finally culminates in him doing Drag for the first time. I will read anything Dean Atta writes, and I wish I had read this sooner.

This is a MUST READ.

I loved to see Michael go on a journey of self-discovery and self-love, how he found himself among the drag community and the support he received along the way. I also liked the exploration of the intersection between parts of his identity and to see what it means to him and others in the novel. The flamingo metaphors were beautiful, the verse format was really easy to follow and effective, yet my favourite parts were the little poems he would share with us full of his doubts, difficulties and joys in life. The last one specially made me really emotional.

Highly recommended.

Content warning: colourism, difficult relationship with father, use of  anti-LGBTQ slurs - see other CWs below.

What a book. I just wish it was fully in verse. The sections that were fully in verse were amazing! I wanted more of that! The last pages of the book really made it for me, it was beautiful seeing Michael “become”.
