Minus .25 star for how unbelievably annoying Mara Jade is (and no her past doesn’t give her justification for being unbearable as a character), but otherwise would have 100% been a 5 star book. Highly recommend!

Timothy Zahn’s beginning chapter to his epic Thrawn trilogy is a beautiful continuation of George Lucas’s Star Wars trilogy. Not only does it respect its creator and follow up those films well, but at the same time it expands the world and characters of this beloved saga.

Okay - I did not love this book and I did not hate it. But, I enjoyed it more than not, with only a few small complaints.

ISSUE #1 - I hated the Wookie speak - I understand the need for it, but it was annoying, and I was happy when those chapters were over.

ISSUE #2 - I dislike repetitiveness, and to say within three different chapter within 100 pages that someone 'waited a pair of heartbeats' - once sounds good - the second time jarred me and the third annoyed me.

KUDOS#1 - I like that the book was a bookend, in that a story begins, and then splinters apart as the cast separates, only to culminate at the end together - it was done well, and seamlessly.

I believe that even though this is no longer considered the official canon of Star Wars, this is a fun read, and worth the time.

I'm on the border between four and five stars for this one. It is a great story with all the characters from the movies without the sometimes terribly cheesy elements that some other books have. Zahn also does a really great job of buildin tension.

This was a great start to what I think is going to be an incredible trilogy. I’m quite new to sci-fi so a lot of it was a bit difficult to grasp especially all of the battle scenes but other than that I thoroughly enjoyed the exploration of characters and I enjoyed seeing more to Leia and Luke’s relationship which is overlooked in the movie franchise.

I decided to read this out of curiosity, and because a friend moved out and gave me a bag of Star Wars novels. There are quite a few hokey moments that call back to the original films. Thrawn is a pretty good villain, although I wondered for more than half of the novel as to when they would specify that he is a Chiss. Maybe that race was a post-Heir creation? I honestly dont know, but theyre really cool if you play tabletop RP (Edge of the Empire). Overall, it wasn't great but it wasn't terrible.

My big complaint would be against creating creatures that block or shield from the Force. It was just ridiculous. Besides that, there were facets of Zahn's writing style that I found odd. For example, he would use "_____ said to the other" instead of saying a name or using a descriptor. I've never seen this style before.....and I read a fair lot of books from different genres.

I might continue the series, mostly because I have the trilogy on my shelf, but not right away. There's an existing pile of To Read waiting for me already.
