This works so well with the other books in this series, and I loved the way the story shifts perspective between the main characters. I read it in two or three sittings, and while the mystery wasn't quite as compelling as Code Name Verity, I still found it a page turner. The characters are wonderful, and I really loved them even more than the story. I think it would work fine if you haven't read the other books, but obviously I have so take that with a grain of salt.
Code Name Verity is one of my favorite books, and the series is amazing. I had high expectations for the newest addition to the series, and they were exceeded. I tried putting the book down after each part, but found myself picking it back up to keep reading until I finished the whole thing. Another masterpiece by Elizabeth Wein. If you haven’t read any books in this series yet... what are you waiting for?
Love this book! Elizabeth Wein is one of my favorite authors and she did an amazing job with this book. It's one that was enhanced by having read the other books in the "series" (I'm unsure what else to call it), but someone who has not read anything else by her would also be able to fully enjoy it. I really liked the fleshing out of Jamie's character, in addition to the new characters introduced. Overall a good book, a little slow in some parts but a nice read - 4.5 stars.
I was really disappointed with this after loving code name verity so much! I don’t know if it’s because I read it in digital & not physical form? But Louisa just got a bit annoying sometimes with how naive she acted. It had some good bits but I just overall didn’t really enjoy it :/
Trigger warnings: war, racism, death, fire, plane crash, blood, gun violence, honestly there's a LOT of death, medical grossness, suicide, explosions, death of a friend.
I was a little hesitant going into this because Code Name Verity is honestly one of my favourite books and while I adored Rose Under Fire, I was kind of meh about The Pearl Thief. Like, I enjoyed The Pearl Thief. But it wasn't on the same level as Code Name Verity, you know?
This, to be honest, is also not on the same level as Code Name Verity, but it was FAR more compelling than The Pearl Thief. Louisa is a truly delightful protagonist. I loved getting both Jamie's perspective on things and an insight into his career as an RAF pilot, something we don't get to see in Code Name Verity. I really enjoyed the inclusion of the Enigma machine in a non-Bletchley Park setting, and I liked that Wein included a protagonist who's West Indian and dealing with regular prejudice despite being a British subject and despite having a parent die in service in the war.
Basically, this isn't as spectacular as Code Name Verity, and it's showing a very different side to the war, and I enjoyed it far more than I expected it to.

I really loved Code Name Verity which I read a long time ago, so I was excited to pick this one up. It's good, but I think I might have missed some connections between the books from not having read the others recently. So I think I want to re-read the whole series before giving a final review for this one!
