Escaping Exodus

This was a fairly solid sci-fi book. It’s about a generation ship in a way, which is my favorite sci-fi sub genre. It had really interesting worldbuilding and put a spin on generation ships I haven’t seen before. The only issue was there was a bit of weird pacing at times, but it wasn’t so bad that it was unreadable.

Oooh fun premise. This felt new! Humans are parasites of giant space-faring beasts. The gender dynamics (sexism against men, matrilineal society) felt a bit too pointed. I liked that this was unapologetically queer, I liked the environmentalism, and again, the world-building concept was great. But there were parts of this that just don't work for me. Pay attention to content warnings!
surprise pregnancy (... by an alien) is the big no-no for me, but tentacle sex is a close second.
The characters often felt a bit juvenile, but that makes sense, since... they are pretty young, and this is YA.

Enjoyed what I read but it was a bit too YA for me at the time, I want to go back at some point cause the living inside a space beast was sick in concept & execution
Loveable characters: No

This book is largely about gender but it uses trans people in a really bizarre way that’s mostly about power. This did not feel good as a trans reader. Honestly I would rather have no trans characters in this extremely binary, hierarchical world than have the author choose to use trans characters in only dehumanizing ways.
