DID NOT FINISH

no rating, started and decided not for me (dropped several chapters in)

what i liked -
-fascinating world
-lush writing style
-intriguing dark academia premise

what wasn’t for me -
-protagonist seemed unlikeable and underdeveloped to me and upon reading reviews, i found that if you wanted a character focused story this wasn’t that. i skipped towards the back third and found myself not loving where the characters were at and decided it wasn’t for me!

The first 200 pages I found slow. But that doesn’t make them not intriguing. I wanted answers, and I needed to know that my distrust in
Keiran
was correct, and by the tides of this book it was correct!!!
The magic system was sooo interesting and unique in such a fun way! Baz is by far my favourite character and a specific reveal had me sobbing! Emory’s character growth is something I was very happy to see as the choices she was making were pissing me off!
I’m excited to get into the second book and see how this story continues and how these character continue to grow and accept themselves!

I’m really not sure I would classify this as “dark academia” because I could count on one hand the amount of times Emory went to class. I understand why Lacelle chose to start the story after the drownings, but I felt a disconnect to Emory and Romie because we never got to see their relationship in the present, only in vague flashbacks. I think a few chapters from Romie’s perspective would have further cemented the characters. Don’t get me started on the “plot twist” because anyone with two brain cells could see that coming. This books saving grace is the world building. The magic premise was unique and kept my interest throughout the whole book. The different phases of the moon broken down further into the tides scratched an itch in my brain. The concept of collapsing was well done and I hope we get more information on it and the institution. I can’t say I’m not curious about how the series will continue, and I will probably be reading the next book despite my grievances.

*unhelpful complaint*
why was there so many nicknames??? the constant use of nicknames drove me up the wall more than any of the character flaws. ROMIE IS ALREADY SHORT FOR ROSEMARY WHY DOES IT NEED TO BE SHORTENED FURTHER. and no one on gods green earth is using “nel” instead of penelope >:(

This book… almost couldn’t get through it because the main character was so unlikable and unsympathetic. She made terrible, selfish, half baked, manipulative choices… one after the other. The male hero which is the other POV in the book kept me in it. I think it’s fine to have unlikable main characters but without any redeeming qualities is a rough read.

I think actually if this had been 200 pages shorter it would have been better. The last 40 pages were the only with any real action.
