This was so painfully excellent. It jumps straight in, and cuts almost right off at the end; but the case studies are so different, so engaging, and the writing style is a delight. I thoroughly enjoyed this and have been recommending it to everyone.

In writing about the ways in which humans are trying to deal with the messes we've made, Elizabeth Kolbert covers the work of a lot of smart, dedicated people with creative approaches to addressing hard problems. She also makes it clear that we have a bad track record of implementing "solutions" without fully understanding their impacts, and in doing so, creating new problems to solve. The reporting and writing are excellent and engaging. Mixed opinions in my book group as to whether it this book was ultimately optimistic or discouraging -- but the author herself says this is "a book about the world spinning out of control."

quick entertaining yet informative read. information presented was mostly a recap for me but it would be a good intro for the general public

Very good book, giving examples of changes in our ecosystem enviroment. The different waterways and over time how our native species has evolved. Everytime we try to correct something, it gets worse. The cane toad in Australia was a good example.
