Teddy Roosevelt must have been a fascinating person in real life. I found most of this book very interesting, although it does become a slog in places. One thing that struck me is that politics really hasn't changed that much in the last 100+ years.

An intoxicating tale and the first time I've read up on the legendary TR. I was surprised to see that his presidency wasn't covered so I will be seeking that out soon.

Notes:
Matters are constantly which require the most thoughtful concentration and the most stubborn inaction
Extraordinary ability to translate thought into deed - with such blinding rapidity, sometimes, that the two seemed to fuse
Was too strong a man to be susceptible to flattery, asking not for "rosy" forecasts but fact

‘Never, never, you must never either of you remind a man at work on a political job that he may be President. It almost always kills him politically. He loses his nerve; he can’t do his work; he gives up the very traits that are making him a possibility. I, for instance, I am going to do great things here, hard things that require all the courage, ability, work that I am capable of… But if I get to thinking of what it might lead to-‘
He stopped, held us off, and looked into our faces with his face screwed up into a knot, as with lowered voice he said slowly: ‘I must be wanting to be President. Every young man does.  Yet I won’t let myself think of it; I must not, because if I do, I will begin to work for it, I’ll be careful, calculating, cautious in word and act, and so - I’ll beat myself.’

This is a fantastic biography of Teddy Roosevelt, spanning from his early life up to when he became president. He was a fascinating and multitalented person, and the author does a brilliant job of telling of his life as a politician, a cowboy, and a soldier. It’s a great read for anyone interested in US history!

I went looking for a Theodore Roosevelt biography. Found this one. Didn't realize that this was Book 1 of 3. Can't wait to read the other 2. Roosevelt is remarkable. A force of the time. I can't help but wonder what he'd be or do in our times. A republican with progressive leanings. Odd combination for our time and that time too. We need a forceful personality, like TR, on our national stage to push back the excesses of our current gilded age. TR coined the term, the "wealthy criminal class". No truer words have been spoken.

A very deep dive into the pre-presidential years of Theodore Roosevelt, certainly one of the more interesting presidents in American history.  While I found the level of detail - particularly around collateral characters surrounding Roosevelt - a bit too much, overall Morris provides an outstanding backgrouind for understanding how Roosevelt became who he was, the breadth of his knowledge and experience, and why he was well prepared to take over the office when McKinley was killed.
