The voice and writing style is second to none! I love Theodore Roosevelt and learned so much. The second half of the book wasn't nearly as exciting but I think it's due to not as much immediate success but hard work instead.

I am so glad I decided to read this book. I have to say this one of my favorite all-time reads. When I first got it I thought it was going to be a tedious undertaking, but boy was I wrong. It is so interesting and well written. I am very excited to read the other two books in the series.

Even though I knew most of this information prior to reading this book, I still enjoyed this deep dive into the life of Teddy Roosevelt, a complicated yet beloved American President. Some may say that Morris gets bogged down in minute details of Roosevelt's life yet for a man as complicated as Roosevelt, to spend nearly 800 pages only on his life prior to becoming president seems far too short to truly understand him.
For all lovers of history, I highly recommend this book and cannot wait (even though it will likely take me years to get through my to read list and actually get to the second and third books) to read the rest of the biography series.

What a great American! Speaks 6 languages, wrote 35 books wins a Medal of Honor for leading Cavalry charge uphill against an entrenched enemy, Cowboy, NYC Police Commissioner and Governor, all by age 40. Mr. Morris discussed how TR would write observations about history though the lens of currents events in his life. In 2016, an election year I see parallels in today's political landscape to TR's era. Once again anti-establishment candidate's are confounding conventional wisdom. Mr. Morris does a phenomenal job is illustrating what a extraordinary individual Theodore Roosevelt was and in bringing to life the early period of his life. I would recommended this book to any student of history as well as anyone looking for perspective with today's political landscape.

Absolutely filled to the brim with interesting information. I found it hard to stay in it at times and would sit it down for weeks at a time. I always found my way back in though. Overall, I highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in learning more about Roosevelt.

The book documents Theodore Roosevelt's life, personal and political, up to the assassination of President McKinley where upon he ascends to the Presidency.  Like most biographies of famous people, the book is a little overlong but the author keeps a good pace and provides some good insights on one of our most famous presidents.

An outstanding book! Morris chronicles the life of the future President from his birth through his term as Vice President (this is the first volume in a three part biography of Roosevelt). Incorporating lots of first hand material, much of it from Roosevelt himself, and really making this most interesting personality come to life in the pages of his biography. While Roosevelt's life lends itself well to a fast paces biography, this book is a page turner due to the clear, descriptive writing style of the author as well.

This is a well written biography of an absolutely fascinating man. Only reincarnation can explain the vast assortment of great gifts Teddy Roosevelt brought with him into life. It is really inspiring to read about someone so talented, tireless and so dedicated to public service. And at the same time, such a character, so entertaining! I'll jump straight into the second volume of this trilogy.

I am incredibly proud of myself for having finished this TOME of a book. If I were to have read this in paperback, it would have totaled 960 pages.

I have the utmost respect for Edmund Morris. You can feel just how passionate he is about the subject of Teddy Roosevelt. The time his research alone must have taken... I am in awe. After reading this book, I feel like I know Roosevelt on a personal level.

This book deals with Roosevelt's childhood, his college years, his first marriage, his early political career, and his path to the Presidency. The book ends with him receiving word that he is about to become President.

I firmly believe, after reading this incredibly detailed account of his life, struggles, and personal convictions, that Roosevelt was one of the most interesting people in American history. Just reading about all of his accomplishments is exhausting. How could one man do it all? But he did. I feel he lived at least three lives. And Edmund Morris makes sure to tell you about every second in an interesting and thought-provoking way.

I'm extremely proud for finishing this and look forward to reading the next chapter of his life.
