Enjoyed very much in audio format, but may have struggled if I read in physical format due to all the descriptive passages. Like that there were clues I could actually figure out before they were revealed.

Not for the first time, I was struck by Conan Doyle’s weak structuring of the mystery. For the most part, Watson investigates the case solo. He unearths many facts that he cannot piece together, but which give a fairly strong hint to the reader. At last, Sherlock appears, confirms what the reader has already guessed, and names the criminal. Whilst there is a trap, there is no grand capture or accusation of the villain. Nor is there a simultaneous elucidation of the facts, demonstrating Holmes’ brilliance. Indeed, there is very little deductive genius to fawn over. The conclusions that have not already been guessed by the reader are mere fact finding exercises orchestrated off-stage. There is not even a battle of wits between Sherlock and the man he describes as his most capable antagonist. All in all, a decent yarn, but pretty disappointing for a classic of detective fiction.

Perfectly satisfactory. I liked how we mainly focused on Watson's deductive skills.
