Doyle's classic remains universal in its originality about family curses and a demonic hound.

I love Sherlock Holmes. He is possibly the most interesting character ever written, and I have enjoyed so many of his appearances in movies and on television. After reading the first few Mary Russell novels (the first one at book club), I realized that the time was right to read some of the original Sherlock Holmes books.
This was my first one, and I enjoyed it. It had a good mystery, a wonderful setting and enough intrigue an plot twists to keep it interesting.
I did have a few problems with the book, the first being that Sherlock Holmes was gone for half of it. There is a long section in the middle where Watson just sends him letters and writes in his journal, and I wanted more action and dialogue throughout that section. I would have enjoyed it more if Holmes had been there.
The other problem is that I have watched lots and lots of police procedurals and even though Sherlock Holmes is still good, it doesn't feel quite as intense or challenging to solve as some of the more modern mysteries I have watched and read. It is still good, and I imagine at the time it blew everybody's minds, but now it is maybe a bit ordinary.
Those problems aside, it was a good read. I had fun imagining all of the actors I have ever seen play Sherlock Holmes in the story and seeing which one fit best. There wasn't a clear winner, but it was a fun exercise.

This book was so fascinating! The deductions of Sherlock never cease to amaze me. The book is intricately crafted and the plot is thick. It’s such a high-stakes, exciting plot that astounds.

El sabueso de los Baskerville, 1902
El valle del miedo, 1915
Arthur Conan Doyle
