Well, “The Hound of the Baskervilles” was excellent, of course. Although I knew it would be since I am a Sherlock Holmes fan. The only trouble was that I knew too much of the plot, leading me to believe that I have already read this book. It is also possible that as you get older detective novels just become more obvious. It’s hard to say, really, but even if the plot was obvious, the book was still lots of fun to read. I’d read it again.

The thing I like about Sherlock Holmes, and this one in particular, is that right in the story itself, Holmes advises Watson not to try to do any solving while he's on location, just to collect facts. That's probably the best approach to this story from a reader's perspective, too. A couple of crucial details were things that nobody reading the book would pick up on, like the presence of perfume in a letter. Accordingly, the narration does nothing to point you anywhere in particular, but the pieces all fall together very nicely in the end, which is all you could really ask for in a mystery. It took all the hard work out of trying to solve a mystery novel before the detectives do, and I give Doyle posthumous props for that.

Watson is such a patient man, and it is rarely more obvious than in this story. Sherlock is just totally egotistical and too busy to let Watson know where he is or what he's up to, poor lad. All of that to say it's not surprising that Sherlock meets a man who, on first appearance, tells him "I covet your skull" and only becomes more willing to help with his case. Weirdo. But, overall, this was a fun, quick story with a slightly less than satisfying, and not very fantastical, outcome, but it had some funny moments and a few characters that added a nice layer of complexity that overall made for at least an interesting scenario, if not an interesting solution to the case.

I recognize this was written a hundred and twenty years ago, but the skull differences convo seemed like it came up more often then it should, with a new slur every time.

I consider reading works from the past important but you can probably skip this one lol. A neat little mystery but one that although you can guess at parts you can’t really understand fully because Sherlock keeps certain information he finds out to himself until it’s time to regal us with how he solved it, and it doesn’t really provide anything in the way of literary merit(not that it was meant to lol)

Excellent mystery and easy read.
