A great but straightforward story with wonderfully interesting characters, technology, and environs. Surely the inspiration for Avatar.
I felt that although the narrative was grown and established slowly and meticulously throughout the book the ending felt quite rushed and the result was a bit contrived.
Despite that it was an enjoyable read and I found myself trying to find time to churn through it.
worth the read.

1961 Hugo Award finalist - Best Novel
Originally published in Astounding Science Fiction, January-March 1960, this novel packs a lot of story into a small number of pages (wouldn't it be nice if some of today's writers could do the same!). It's clear that Harrison was catering to editor John W. Campbell, Jr.'s fascination with psychic abilities, as the protagonist has psi powers that enable him to be an unbeatable gambler, and ultimately help him solve the problem of what's really happening on the deathworld. On the surface, this novel is an action packed space opera about humans fighting ferocious alien species on a world with a harsh environment. But there is a much deeper lesson to be learned, namely that people can change their minds when presented with information that contradicts their beliefs. It's hard, but it can be done. It's a lesson that too many have forgotten in today's world, so it's worth revisiting.

This was a really fun, pulpy, space-adventure book with just the right amount of action and (light) philosophical undercurrents. I listened to the Librivox audiobook recording, which was really well done.
A good read. This book has aged well and I can not wait to read more.
This was just what the doctor ordered as an interlude between wading through the literary classics on my kindle. I'm pretty tight when it comes to paying large amounts of money for e-books, but this was a bargain for under £1.00. It's old school sci-fi, with plenty of action, great descriptions of the Deathworld and its unsavoury inhabitants, and a classic plot a la Seven Samurai, Fistful of Dollars.
