Maybe because these are all women I know, I found them likable despite their flaws. That said, I found the ending a bit flat, and even after 388 pages, sudden.

Ellen's review: This is a book about acceptance and forgiveness and about the often uncomfortable ties that bind families together for better or worse. It would be great for a book group---lots to discuss.

If you want to read a slow moving book about a horrifyingly bad mother and selfish woman who blames it all on her "secret", then read this book. When the secret is finally revealed, I actually put the book down and walked away because it was ridiculous. Her children are not much better and I'm not even sure who the middle one was since she's barely even mentioned in the book - so why bother with having the character? And the daughter-in-law? Did she have a drinking problem? Going through a mid-life crisis? I don't understand her behavior at all. One minute she's happy in her marriage - then next she's dancing with strangers in bars and kissing people by port-a-johns? I get it - the cracks in the perfect family but the shift was extreme. Ugh - this book - I struggled to finish because I wanted to find out the "BIG SECRET" and the secret didn't match the build up.

Two stars is probably being generous. This book definitely did not live up to its description. Despite being titled Maine, barefoot half the book took place there and it certainly did not leave me craving a trip up there (despite my natural love of Maine). The characters in this book were mostly selfish and cruel, and bullied their own family members. This claimed to be humorous but it was nothing of the sort. There was little to no character development or growth throughout the novel. It was definitely not the summer beach read I was hoping for.

Loved this book! Yes, I am a little biased since they live in Canton and winter in Maine. Plus, they're Irish Catholic. Breezy read that I wish I had purchased last summer instead of waiting 6 months for the library copy. I'm also a sucker for things told from different character perspectives and this has 4 (!) POVs.

I felt like I was reading a different book than was described on the back cover. Very little, if no plot.

Pretty good, lacking redemption in the end, far more serious than the cover imparts. :) Never judge...

Just not my kind of book. It did exactly what the summary said - takes a in depth look at four very different women who are related. The problem is that they didn't really solve any problems or evolve in any real way. The primary character - the grandmother - was hostile, miserable, self-centered, with little or no insight into her own issues... and nothing changed about that over the course of the book or her life... I don't think I would read her again. That said, I still gave it 3 stars because I found the story very interesting, the glimpse into these women's lives and how their mind worked... If that sounds good, you'll like. Basically, it was very weak on plot
