Lonesome Dove the mini-series has been a staple in my family for decades. But I never felt compelled to read the book until a friend confided that it was her favorite book of all time. She’s an avid reader and not inclined towards westerns so I committed to reading it. It is now my favorite book too.
While it might be one of the longest books I’ve read, it felt too short. I loved the genius in the writing. How characters who didn’t speak much but were intelligent had brilliant internal narratives, those who were talkative didn’t have narratives until they were alone, and characters who were not particularly intelligent have brilliant behaviors like sharpening their knives - because we can conclude that at some point not written about they were told they were dull or not sharp and they took that literally. The thoughts, behaviors, and words of these characters are so complete you feel you truly know them. And you love them even for their flaws.
I will recommend this book to everyone. I love it. It is one of those books that makes me feel like I know myself better now that I’ve read it. I feel bad for having given any other book five stars (with few exceptions) because THIS is a five star novel.

Only picked up this book because it was recommended to me. At first I couldn’t get into it, almost didn’t finish, but somehow got mighty interested in the characters in around 41% and after that I couldn’t put it down. Loved the characters, lived for the old wild west vibes. Kept wishing they would stop dying. Also take me to Montana? Won’t be revisiting for the other parts though

The reason I finished Lonesome Dove is my personal commitment to reading all the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction winners.
The positive points of the novel are the dialogue, voicing of the narration, and storytelling. The many negatives include almost all the female characters are prostitutes, indigenous Americans are portrayed as evil incarcerate, ethnic and racial groups are stereotyped, men have zero emotional intelligence and violence is celebrated and glorified.
Unfortunately the mythology expressed by the storytelling emphasizes a very negative self identity which continues to harm us as Americans.

If you are going to read just one Western in your whole life let it be Lonesome Dove.
And if you are going to be reading Lonesome Dove let it be the audio version.
Lee Horsley you had the perfect voice for this book. It was 36 hours of pure listening pleasure and I am now suffering from major withdrawals.
I came to love each character in different ways and initially didn’t want to give this 5 stars as the author can be SO cruel with his characters. But once I have calmed down I decided that the book does deserve my 5 stars as this was such a surprisingly wonderful experience.
Highly recommended
