Charming
It's so heart-warming and the character depictions especially of her family are very funny. The dialogue is clever and I love the descriptions of nature. I reread this book at least once a year

This is my second time reading this (or arguably first, since the first time around I listened to the audiobook). I was sure that this was going to be a regular re-read for me and now I'm even more confident. This is the type of book that feeds the soul.
I appreciate a novel about adults that still has a coming-of-age feel to it. I find all the characters, even the antagonistic ones, charming and funny in a Jane Austen kind of way. I love how humble and slice-of-life the romance is written. Grand passion is well and good, but I have a soft spot for something more down-to-earth and slow-growing like this.
I have one kind of nitpicking complaint.During the scene where Barney is telling Valency about his past, he comes across a little too "woe is me" for my tastes. It rubbed me the wrong way when he tells Valency that he had it even worse than her. Measuring and comparing suffering makes me uncomfortable. And frankly, it's a little hard to take from someone who grew up rich and privileged with choice. I wish he had acknowledged how much more power he had and has compared to her: financially and socially.

So many reviews saying that this book was not just a romance, and they’re right, but they failed to leave out that her ultimate success banked on her husband being a secret millionaire. It felt contrived and too convenient.
Also it seemed like the spunk and vigor that saved her was quieted by the presence and life of the man who ultimately became her saviour.
So yes, while she does come of age in the first half, it can’t be denied that her success feels like it’s not fully hers in the second half.

I loved The Blue Castle! And Valancy is so feisty!!
Valancy's family never seems to let her forget she's an "old maid." At twenty-nine years old, she spends her days visiting friends and family, doing handicrafts, and certainly NOT reading! For "it was permissable, even laudable, to read to improve your mind..., but a book that was enjoyable was dangerous."
After her diagnosis of a fatal case of "angina pectoris with an aneurism," Valancy Stirling has decided she's had enough. Gone are the days of walking on eggshells and forever following the constraints of polite society. Valancy is taking control of what little bit of life she has left.
This book was everything heartwarming and cozy! Valancy's Blue Castle and the island of Mistawis sounded absolutely divine! I loved L. M. Montgomery's descriptions of the seasons! I loved Valancy's journey! The Blue Castle is the perfect read for someone looking for a hug in a book!
