Yes 5 stars! Why? I don't know. I sat down on my couch and cracked this open and spent a whole day enveloped in the swirling lives of this cast of characters. I loved the breadth, the complexity, and the writing style made it feel like an accessible, lyrical conversation between friends.
The book is very different to others I’ve read so I can see why it stands out. However it wasn’t my thing, I kept getting confused who each of the characters were and I just didn’t really like any of them.
I enjoyed this quite a lot. I'm not sure I really liked the writing style, but the story and characters were excellent. I really liked the connections between the different points of view, and found it overall very enjoyable.

Took me a little while to get into it but once I hit Dominique’s story, I was sold. Beautiful writing and deep characterization.

A unique, multi-faceted and authentic novel about the lesser-told stories.
I got engulfed by this wondrous book. It's been sitting on my bookshelves for 3 years. The first time I picked it up, for some reason I could not find its rhythm. If the same happened to you, pick it up again and you won't regret it!
TLDR: 5*/5. For anyone that wants to read a fresh perspective of the living experience, this is a beautiful way to do it.
Evaristo weaves an intricate patchwork of 12 women's lives - the thread gets passed on from mother to daughter, to colleague, to great grandmother. She masterfully unfolds the 12 stories, swiftly changing continents, centuries and contexts, without "rushing" the narration of each unique character. The literary technique of fluidity helps us flow through the stories effortlessly. Although the twelve women face different obstacles, stereotypes and people, there is an invisible passing of the torch which holds the vital fire that helped them not only survive, but thrive, during their life-time.
The author honors the sacrifices that have been made by women throughout history, for the younger generations to live the way that they do. She strikes a balance between the rough, painful parts of each story by introducing a moment of 'justice' at a later point - helping the reader feel relief, and making it an overall optimistic outlook on life!
By far, my favorite read this year.
