Niet verwacht dat ik weer eens Mulisch zou lezen. Maar na meer dan een jaar Wagner luisteren in de auto dacht ik dat het geen kwaad kon. Het viel mij erg op hoe ongecompliceerd Mulisch Siegfried begint. Heldere stijl, rustig, kabbelend.

Leuke hommage aan Thomas Mann (Doktor Faustus). Al vraag ik mij af waarom Mulisch het nodig achtte om een Eco-achtige (De slinger can Foucault) glijbaan aan filosofische ‘bespiegelingen’ in te voegen. Met de enorme sprongen komt het niet veel verder dan tweedejaars filosofie. Tijd om een paar oude recensies op te duikelen.

Dit boek sloeg helemaal nergens op maar was verder best vermakelijk, zoals vaker bij Mulisch.

I enjoyed it immensely (and was a bit disturbed by how much I could enter into what the protagonists said about his writing). It's not five stars for two reasons: a) I refuse to give 100% to any book published in 2002 that has such a poor showing of female characters; and b) as much as I liked it, I do think it does to Hitler the exact opposite of what we should be trying to do. Still, from a purely artistic point of view it works great.

De passages over Herter vind ik mooi, maar de filosofische passages hoefden van mij niet zo. Pagina's voor mij onbegrijpelijke overpeinzingen waarvan ik me afvroeg wat ze toevoegen.

Again with the Wagner, and again with the underlying sensation that a Rackham illustrated book may be the singularly best way to go about Wagner uptake. Fun.

Je suis dubitative après la lecture de ce court roman. Le livre commence plutôt bien, mais là où le personnage de l’écrivain devrait nous entraîner dans ses questionnements, j’ai décroché complètement. Il déblatère une suite de remarques philosophiques dans son dictaphone. Alors je sais bien que je manque de culture et de références philosophiques, mais là, je n’ai rien compris à son délire. Soit je n’ai pas perçu la nouveauté dans ses propos, soit je suis totalement bouchée. Étant malade depuis quatre jours il se peut que j’aie perdu de mes capacités intellectuelles, mais tout de même. La fin abrupte ne laisse pas tellement de place non plus à la réflexion, en tous cas en ce qui me concerne. J’ai eu aussi l’impression qu’il faisait passer Hitler pour un concept, une représentation philosophique du Mal et non un humain dégénéré, et je crois que c’est cette intellectualisation qui m’a gênée.
On nous annonce une profonde réflexion sur le Mal et Hitler, mais dans le genre j’ai nettement préféré La part de l’autre d’Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt, moins pédant et pompeux. Mais bon, c’est bien raconté, bien écrit, l’idée est excellente, soyons objectif, ça se lit.
