Something about this was too strange for me. The writing was very descriptive for description’s sake, not because it added anything to the plot or overall reading experience (in my opinion). I figured life’s too short to read a book I didn’t want to read.

Really weird and dreamy and I liked it!
....what did I just read? It was giving strange, weird girl, but also...I felt like I was having a crisis while listening to this book (but maybe not in a panic way...just a strange way).
I just didn’t connect at all, not for me. I don’t mind blurriness but this was on the side of surreal that I don’t get.

It was brilliant.
It was visceral.
It dove headfirst into themes of identity, obsession, creativity, themes of self, one's inner voices shunned by society, parasocial relationships, commodified desire, loneliness, idol portrayal within the industry, the dissolution of self, and the blurred line between longing and delusion.
It also provided literary and media critique.
And overall...it had an authentic portrayal of obsessive behaviour.
And this comes from a person who has been knee deep in fandom culture and K-pop fandoms, and has seen a fair share of obscene behaviour on social media.
Majority of the times my mind was like:
"The fuck am I even reading" and the other times it was like, "Wait I get it. And that's so true. Also damn the writing is absolutely ingenious"
The writing was surreal and over-the-top, lyrical, disorienting, but brilliant.
It felt like I was suspended on an entirely different plane of reality whilst reading
I also appreciated the way Esther Yi used the plot and characters not as story telling props, but as vessels, for these themes and proses..it was genuinely impressive. It read less like a story and more like a philosophical fever dream
But it proved to also be
the bane of my existence.
I despised it.
I loathed the journey (I annotated a lot-)
It felt like an uncanny acid trip, especially when you're on your 3rd mug of caffeine with only 1 hour of sleep
(I just want to know what the author was on whilst writing this. What did she even have in her coffee or breakfast.-)
I’m glad I read it.
I’m glad it’s over.
I don't think I could've survived another 40 pages
(But I might recommend it to someone just to watch them suffer too.)
(I want to say more but I don't even know where to begin so hm if you decide to read this..Good luck folks)
