I knew nothing about this team but now want to hunt down a documentary. I appreciated the way the author wove their games, sign language history, and the background of various characters together. A great read.

I came across this book while browsing at B&N and thought it sounded interesting.

I listened to the book on audio and overall I did like it. I looooove an inspiring football story so tho seas very aligned with my interests.

The book was actually very informative about the deaf community in general. I learned a lot about the history of ASL, deaf schools, and the various theories around deafness as a disability.

What was unique about this story is the way deafness was framed as an advantage. Deafness allowed players to play the game differently. They weren’t distracted by noise, crowds, or trash talk. They used snap counts and used visual vs audio cues to snap the ball which decreased their offside penalties compared to hearing teams. This also drew offside penalties.

The book also explored the struggles of being a deaf athlete both at the societal and individual level. It was really interesting to hear this perspective.

I did kind of struggle with the cohesiveness of the story. I think I make have been more attached to the players in a documentary format. I still am glad I read this book and learned the story.

Also they participated in the pregame activities the year the bengals went to the Super Bowl and that just means a lot to me <3

A good look at a deaf football teams quest for a championship. Mr. Fuller not only recounts the stories of the coaches and players, but also offers some fascinating background history & science on deafness and deaf culture, which helps the reader understand why this team had such a unique advantage against all-hearing teams. The prose could be a bit plain at times, but this was a satisfying read overall.

I enjoyed this audiobook. It was a good introduction to deaf culture and football as a sport. Lots of interesting tidbits I did not know - like the origination of the huddle, etc. I am from San Luis Obispo, and it was clear to me that the author/narrator was definitely not from California as he mispronounced so many city names… Visalia, San Luis Obispo, etcBesides that distraction, I enjoyed the book a lot.

This is a remarkable story. It is so inspiring and this book was so informative about the deaf culture. I think it helps to be a football fan to enjoy some of the details of this book but the author does a great job of detailing plays so that you can picture them. It is amazing how this team of all deaf players and coaches use their deafness as an asset and ultimately outplay every hearing team they face. I loved learning about the history of ASL and schools for the deaf. I loved learning about these kids. I only give this 4 stars because as much as I liked it I found myself having to put it down quite often just because I would get a little bored with the details. But overall this is a great book about a remarkable bunch of kids.
