Utterly hilarious - proper laugh out loud on the train funny. But also very moving at times. Brilliantly written, Kay provides the best footnotes since Pratchett. Read it.

I didn't love the first half so much, but preferred the second one. It's both deeply personal and very funny (not necessarily both at the same time…). Kay talks about his eating disorder, being sexually assaulted and losing his own baby during his wife pregnancy and still having to work on the labour ward. At first I didn't like the way he talked about his partner but it became obvious that he was exaggerating things for the purpose of humour. This book still has interesting reflections on the life of student doctors and the NHS that make me even more grateful for the service and care I receive as a user of the NHS.

I loved ' This is going to Hurt' the book and more recently the BBC1 drama series and this felt like a prequel and a sequel to that. As there were stories from Medical school and his time as a doctor and how he adapted to leaving and the success of the first book. It had some funny anecdotes and had Adams humour throughout it but this felt in some ways a lot more personal. The story of his Eating Disorder, the miscarriage of his child, his grandparents dementia and his rape it was heartbreaking to read at some points. However, it is also so important as him opening up will hopefully help so many others and give those the courage to hopefully speak up. I liked how it told stories throughout the different time frames and how some were funny stories yet others were tragic which I really wasn't expecting.
