Good romantasy. For the series overall:
  • The first book is somewhat slow for plot and painful in terms of women being treated well. Keep reading! The good stuff starts in the middle of book 1. (Not as slow and painful or a start as the Plated Prisoner series or the A Court of Thorns and Roses series.)
  • Lots of steamy sex scenes, including a 3 person entanglement! Spice level is on par with other popular romantasy series (Empyrean is more detailed, Fae and Alchemy is more xxx, Plated Prisoner is more xxx & more detailed, A Court of Thorns and Roses is basically PG-14 love making except in the Cassian book).
  • This series is much stronger in giving the perspective and providing full character for her love interest compared to other popular romantasy series (matched only by the Plated Prisoner Series and ACOTAR)
  • Compared to other popular romantasy series, the plot is really slow in the later books and I think really unsatisfying. Literally, The Primal of Blood and Bone is all filler recaps except for the last quarter and then ends in an unclear and annoying way... After so many pages and books!!! Rude.

WOWOWOWOWOW!!! this series just keeps getting better and better! first of all, thank you jennifer for the dual pov excellence!!! i didn’t know how badly i needed a cas pov until i finally got it.

cas being captured and held captive for half of the book was a tough pill to swallow, but it also gave us the opportunity to see the relationship between poppy and kieran grow and blossom which i absolutely ADORED. the care that kieran has for her has me

The book could have been 2/3rd of its length. Too much description of things that has nothing to do with the plot or the characters. Also, too many cheesy one-liners.

I had to assign myself pages per day like homework to force my way through this one. My sense of justice wants to know how it ends but otherwise I have lost all interest.

UGH. 3.5 ⭐️ I guess. This was a hot garbage LOAD of information. This was like iron flame to me. Loads of information, loads of words and nothing, but everything?? and then the last 2 chapters are boom bam bang. Idk. I was ROLLING my eyes at THE CHAPTER!! iykyk..

Part of me wants to be done with Casteel and Poppy… but I’ve read 5 kagillion words between the Blood and Ash series and the Flesh and Fire series so obviously I’m invested and can’t stop now. But I need a break. My brain is bleeding.

Least favorite book from this series so far.
Ah well, Light in the Flame, here I come.

This first half felt a lot like filler with plot driven points sprinkled in. I didn’t feel as gripped by the story or the characters but I’ll continue forward since I started lol.
