Excellent ending to the Septimus Heap series! Not as good as book #6, but pretty close! We are sad to be done with this series, but looking forward to Angie's next series in the same world!
The plot wasn't very good, it was always indefinite what the plot was. I say Darke should have been the last book.
Rating 3.5* out of 5. I should have known no series on magic could end with six books, but this seventh one still took me by surprise. It's not as good as "Darke", which is my favorite in the series, but "Fyre" does wrap things up very nicely. Besides, when you've gotten to know the main cast of characters as well as I have, reading is like meeting up with friends in a café. Cozy and fun, regardless of the quality of conversation.
So in this book Jenna is nearing the age where she will be crowned queen. Septimus is still magyk apprentice to Marcia, but Marcellus would prefer him as an alchemie apprentice. There is a lot of tension and jealousy in the air and Septimus suffers.
Septimus' older brother Simon gets married to his Lucy and in honor of this even the castle is filled with people. Among them a pair of identical twin brothers who arrive late and never want to leave. Marcia employs them to take shifs as guards of ring that holds two evil wizards trapped.
Jenna sees her mother's ghost for the first time and has to go on a Queen trip to learn queenly stuff which she hates. One of the things she has to learn is how to commit the spirits of evil wizards to an object - such as a ring. This knowledge has been passed from queen to queen for generations.
Under the Castle, Marcellus is lighting the FYRE which will reduce the ring holding the evil wizards to nothing but a ring. The fyre is what started the alchemic disaster hundreds of years ago, which ended up with the destruction of all knowledge of alchemie.
So for all the things which go wrong in this book, it neatly ties up all the lose ends from the previous books. Why there are ice-tunnels under the castle, for example. And what really happened with the alchemic disaster.
I found this a fairly enjoyable read despite the fact that I am (oh horror of horrors) a good 25 years older than the intended age group. I was a teeny weeny bit disappointed because I had expected more, but the book still delivered. If you've read the previous six, then it is highly recommendable. All of the Septimus Heap series is fun and easy to read. As I thought long thought book six was the last, I had adjusted to life without another installment. Now I have to start all over again!

Overall, I actually really liked this one. I think because Jena wasn't front and center for this. Additionally, Simon and Septimus start working together and getting along which was great. I was sad that Septimus didn't pursue more teaching in healing and physik, as I felt that would have been a more interesting route, rather then just being fully Extra-Ordinary wizard or just Alchemist. I couldn't have care less about Jena's coronation, tbh, and it didn't surprise me at all that she and the Queen Circa didn't get along because they are exactly alike in a lot of ways. Milo and Marsia getting...sorta together felt shallow to me as they don't have a lot in common and she can be very stubborn and forceful - just like Milo's previous wife, aka the deceased Queen, aka supposedly the whole reason why he left to venture the world so much in the first place (talk about not a good relationship) - so it felt like they were thrown together just because they happen to be the same age-ish and prominent enough characters. I'm going to read the last book in this series but I won't be reading any more Sage stuff after The Magykal Papers.
Still have yet to read the last little bit at the end, but “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from Magyk.”, is a bit much, honestly, but I suppose answers some questions I had about how the Dragon Boat could be in a temple built in the Roman style. Overall, very happy to have finished this series, after so many years.

What a great end to this series!! I felt that the last few books dragged a little bit, but Fyre was great and flew by for me. I am happy with the way the loose ends were tied up! I really enjoyed this series and am glad I read it.
