Another lovely, enjoyable visit to Earthsea. This one is structurally similar to the first novel, although I did find it a bit less elegant and lyrical, just a bit less light on its feet. Also, I never particularly felt like I connected with Arren as a character - he was fine, but I am just not nearly as attached to him as Ged or Tenar. All of that said, Le Guin's world-building and prose continue to be well worth the price of admission, and the novel has the same gentle-yet-pragmatic emotional core as the others.

Read as part of the Earthsea Quartet collection.

There's always something so calming and peaceful about Earthsea. Many fantasy books have grand battles or tense political scheming or heist action but Earthsea is at its best with the quiet, peaceful moments. Whilst Ged and Arren are sailing the archipelago to save it from destruction it's the times when they're floating serenely along, fishing and swimming that are the most enjoyable.
The slightly surreal village of rafts off the edge of the world is amazing in its atmosphere as is
Spoilerthe land of the dead and it's empty, barren landscape
.
The story itself wasn't very interesting for me but the feel was excellent (have I said that enough?).
Easily recommended to fans of the first 2 books.

I got to the point where I love Ged. I am truly curious if my kid is going to read and enjoy these adventures. It seems to me that they would seem slow to someone who was born directly into this fast moving kind of life. Remains to be seen. I enjoyed them thoroughly.

Mysterious and epic, each book feels fresh with the changing perspectives and timeframes. It was cool seeing Ged as the sort of Gandalf like figure, discover more about dragons, and follow along the spreading mystery that takes peoples’ ability to do magic away, as well as other things. Loved it!
