I hated that the ending was sort of anticlimactic, and happened 30 pages from the end of the book... A lot of build up for a small resolution.

Another re-read with my ears. It's always interesting to see how great young adult fantasy writers deal with the concept of mortality and delve into the world of the dead. Since I first read this book many years ago, I have read Garth Nix's ABHORSEN books, PhilipPullman's HIS DARK MATERIALS trilogy, and INKDEATH by Cornelia Funke, all of which deal with some of the same territory. Since this book came before them, it would be interesting to know how much influence it had on those others. And of course they are all heavily influenced by Dante's Inferno and the tales of Persephone in the classical Underworld. I wonder if the kids are really as interested in the world of the dead as the adults who write for theme, given that teenagers still feel immortal and basically invulnerable. Perhaps they simply regard the storyllne as a delightfully creepy and macabre scenario, not that different from exploring outer space or under the sea . But for this adult reader, these story lines are much in keeping with the deeper thoughts I am beginning to entertain about my own mortality. Anyway, as usual Ursula delivers impeccably precise world building, unforgettable characters, stellar prose and a good ripping yarn. I don't want this series to be over! Onto the next.

Loved it. A grand adventure that crossed over a sprawling world that sometimes seemed too big and messy to save, but I enjoyed every minute of it. Reminded me a lot of how the Narnia books felt which I loved as a kid
