After reading the first two from this series earlier this spring, I finally got my copy from the library to read this Rapunzel retelling. Marissa Meyer has an interesting take on the Rapunzel story.
I felt like this book was a bit of a filler book in the story as the main plot line of the series didn’t feel like it progressed much over the 552 pages.
I’m still invested enough in the general plot to find and restore the Lunar Princess to the Throne while overthrowing Queen Livanna to continue on with the series

Hell. Freakin’. Yeah. The entire second half of this book? Chefs kiss. Rebecca Soler’s audio? Completely captivating. This one really sucked me in, the second half especially, I couldn’t pull away from this even if I tried. Although the books focus was supposed to be on Cress and Thorn, their roles didn’t feel developed to their fullest. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed it, but it didn’t exactly get its time to shine while all that (fantastic, might I add) plot was being developed. We had some twists and turns, some great laughs and also a couple teary moments, this was kinda the full package deal. I cannot wait to see what Winter has in store for us.

Cress is the third installment to the Lunar Chronicles series by Marissa Meyer. I really enjoyed the first two books in this series and was expecting a lot with this; I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED AT ALL. Cress was beautifully written and it EXCEEDED my expectations that I had for it.
Cress follows Cress who is trapped in a satellite in space. She is a lunar shell and has been kept there by Sybil Mira for seven years now. All of her time alone has allowed Cress to become and excellent hacker. She has a goal of getting rescued, and she knows exactly how she wants to do it.
Cress is a lovely character and I love the connections to Rapunzel because they are there but they aren't screaming at you. Some of the aspects are very apparent and others you have to look for deeply and that is a very very nice touch.
I love Meyer's writing style and the way she writes in third person is one of the best I have seen in today's author pool. She has a way of weaving story lines together like nobody else. It is quite amazing to witness.
Meyer has written a masterpiece that includes action, romance, sci-fi, and so many aspects that really bring home the story. I adore her strong female characters. It is so difficult to find well-written strong female characters that are the main focus of the story, and she does this incredibly well!
The best thing is that her characters are very different! HALLELUJAH! Actually differentiated characters. It is such a nice change from normal novels today.
This book didn't have too many slow moments, and if there were, they were brief. I flew through this action-packed book. I, as an aspiring writer, recognize the difficulties of writing certain types of scenes, but especially fight scenes. I am astounded by Meyer's ability to describe them in such a vivid way.
Even though I am still behind on this series, I could not be more excited for Winter this fall! I have no doubt that it will be an epic conclusion to an already amazing series!
I one-hundred percent recommend this series to EVERYONE, but especially those who like retellings of fairy-tales and science fiction and fantasy twists. It is refreshing and different and I seriously commend Marissa Meyer and her capabilities as an author

This is my favorite book of the lunar chronicles so far. I loved Cress so much!! I am excited to read Winter and see what happens next!!

I like this book better than the other books in the series, and I think the reason why is because I like the story of Rapunzel. I like the structure of the tale, I mostly like the way these characters are written and I just have a soft-spot since it reminds me of my childhood. This book is pretty good, however I don’t think it’s great and I found some problems with it.

- Cinder- I find Cinder to be a lovable character. She’s very kind, caring, stubborn and smart, but I was annoyed by Cinder thinking that her having Queen Levana’s powers and being related to her means that she will become like her??? Like what logic is this? She’s also a bad leader. I am begging for her to buy a ‘how to be a better leader for dummies’ before I throw her against a wall out of anger.
- Kai- Emperor Kai is a horrible emperor 😭. Bro has no brain cells. The whole Levana marriage thing is and was dumb. It will forever be dumb.
- Scarlet & Wolf- I wish they did more, but I found them more likable than their own book.
- Cress and Thorne- I loved them so much. Cress is so smart, Thorne is cool and they’re both sooo funny. Thorne is a badass, even when blind he was able to save Cress and destroy some baddies. It was fun!!!
Plot
I found the plot interesting. Not many complaints there, but I wish the characters would plan more. Their original plan to disrupt the wedding and hope the Queen surrendered was so dumb, but I’m happy the doctor knocked some sense into them.
