If I read this before, it was when I was too young to appreciate it, even as an avid reader of talking animal stories. I see why it's held up over the years; it's a magnificent take on a working dog's psychology. I read this as inspiration for an upcoming project and it was exactly what I was hoping it would be. Five of five, Mr. London!

Honestly it felt like reading White Fang all over again. But I won't complain. I like White Fang. :) Sadder ending, though.
Reread for teaching in English 8.
This is such a great realist novel -- everything wants to kill you, and nature doesn't care.

really good, i guess i missed out on it in middle school. i’ve been on a big alaska/nature kick lately so this hit the spot. can’t believe all his other books are also about dogs though it really feels like something you should only do once. besides beating the anachronistic thesaurus occasionally it was really well written too

Required reading for my 7th grade English class. I absolutely despised this book
