I read this the first time in junior high and really enjoyed the gritty depiction of life in a brutal, winter climate. It really took me there and planted the seed for a lifelong fascination with Alaska and Canada. I read it again in high school and was amazed at how a few years of life had allowed me to appreciate elements of the story that had previously eluded me. When younger, I had enjoyed books about dogs (Where the Red Fern Grows, White Fang, Snow Dog, etc.) and this certainly felt like a progression from those types of stories to a more grownup world. If you liked those types of books, this will have a sense of familiarity. Highly recommended!

There is deep commentary on the human condition in this book, as well as White Fang, if you miss it you have lost the point of reading the book.

I read this book for my book club's topic of "banned books." The Call of the Wild, aka, how many times can I cry during 1 book, is absolutely amazing. My husband tells me he read this in the 4th grade which absolutely shocks me, but also tells me why this book was banned. It is laughable almost how violent this book can be at times, though even the violence itself is beautifully written. I found myself so caught up in the story of Buck that I forgot at times that he was a dog. And my heart soared when good things happened to him, and it broke when bad things did.

While I understand why this book was banned, I am glad it isn't anymore. And while I read it with horrified eyes over the blood and violence, it was also beautiful.
