I didn’t know I needed an Eric point of view. And add pirate adventures. It’s just so fucking sweet. my tiny little inner human is very happy!

I wanted to love this one so much, perhaps I went in with way too high expectations. Sadly, it fell so so short. Plot holes, weird imagery like a 3rd grader was writing a report on the movie at times.
I love the premise, just not the execution.
Cover art is 15/10.

Pro's:
- It had lots of diversity
- Provided some explorations of the different characters and relationships among them
- Reading scenes from the movie in a different perspective was interesting

Con's:
- Perfect example for "telling and not showing", so much information was just compressed in dialogue
- The author intended to add so many plots to the story and they all just felt rushed and flat
- It has issues with the pacing

I love a good fairytale retelling ESPECIALLY when it comes to my favorites such as The Little Mermaid or Beauty and The Beast.
And it's even better when you can get birth aides off the story.

2.5 stars. It was light and quick but felt like an early draft rather than an edited book ready for publishing. There were several scenes that were confusing and hard to follow. Most of the characters felt like they were there just to exist and I couldn’t tell you anything distinct about them even after reading the whole thing. Was just kind of blah but served the purpose I wanted from it.

I HAD SUCH A FUN TIME READING THIS
I am a huge Disney head, so when I saw this in my library I was definitely curious! I also had a moment where I thought "well what if it's bad" and I was surprised by how good this is. We all know the little mermaid is an AMAZING Disney movie, however while Prince Eric isn't as flat as the earlier Disney princes, he still is very underdeveloped as a character. Seeing a story from his point of view was so fun and interesting, we got to learn about his kingdom and their politics, his friends, his family, how he feels about being future king etc. My two favorite parts were
1. When the book described the ship wreck that lead to Ariel saving him, yes I know this scene hundreds of times so I know exactly what happens, but it was actually really intense reading it and seeing it in my mind
2. When Vanessa(Ursula) put the hypnotizing spell on him. Hearing how involuntary it was and how it took over his mind and dulled his emotions was so cool to me

If you like Disney and love the little mermaid u might enjoy this one I sure did

Excuse me, look at this cover. I knew that when I saw this book on Bookstagram, I had to read it.

Honestly, it reminded me of the Twisted Tale. I loved Eric’s character and how he had more depth with his backstory, the curse associated, and the overall world-building. This could’ve passed as an “original” story with totally different characters and I would’ve probably enjoyed it as well. Still, I'm glad this book wasn't just a reiteration of the movie's events in his POV> He and Ariel were very cute here and I love how we got to see more moments of them together while she was on land.

The original Disney little mermaid retold from Eric’s perspective with a bit of a twist! An overall adorable read. I laughed and smiled when the author literally intertwined the scenes and dialogue from this classic Disney. I rolled my eyes at the “diverse” casting for every character not already in the movie. The writing style was good. An enjoyable read for me.

3.5 rounded down!

Prince Eric is one of my favorite Disney princes so I was excited to read this book. The book tells the story of Prince Eric who is determined to break a curse that was placed on him when he was younger. I really liked the premise here of Eric’s curse - Eric is such an easygoing character that it almost seems unfair someone as kind and charismatic as he is would be cursed. The curse also was very on point because it’s the total opposite of what Ariel needs to break her own deal. I enjoyed the books version of Ursula as well, she seemed way more powerful in this story and it was interesting to read about what her other plans my have been besides what we know about her from the original work.

Where it sort of felt flat for me was that the story was less of retelling and more of directly taking the Little Mermaid and adding a few extra bits to it. It didn’t feel like a new story. If you’ve seen the movie, you pretty much know exactly how the story is going to go. While there were added bits that made it much more Eric’s story rather than Ariel’s those bits didn’t feel necessary because the story ended the same. There were also some parts of the book that would read weird if you hadn’t already seen the original movie, which I suppose is a safe enough assumption that most people have but when I read a retelling I prefer when they are completely different to the original.

Despite that, this was a light and easy read - perfect for the beach which is where I read it. It wasn’t necessarily anything spectacular, but it was not bad either.
