This book reminded me of why I fell for the series. The first part was my least favorite (amnesia? Really? I understood it driving the plot forward but it still annoyed me. And I guess it was a great way to juxtapose who Laurence had been and who he has become). The second and third parts were great - so glad to see the Chinese plot lines pick up again and to finally get back to battling Napoleon.

I don't love amnesia plots, so this book was a bit disappointing. I also found the russian campaign a bit confusing and boring.

Naomi Novik's biggest weakness as a writer is plot. These Temeraire novels are all over the place. Characters come and go, settings change suddenly, story arcs are rushed, and nothing connects. These novels are lumpy. I've learned not to read them for plot. Fortunately, Novik is great with characters. Spending 400 pages with Temeraire and Laurence are worth it no matter what the faults with the story. These characters live and breathe. I'm sad there is only one Temeraire and Laurence novel left. I'll miss them.

The ending was great and goes back to a lot of what makes this series great. I can't say I enjoyed the first half as much.

not the most exciting installment for me in this series. I am interested to see how things proceed as we get further along in this series.

Not sure how I felt about this one. I love this series but this book felt a little all over the place. The mission felt like it changed too many times, instead of one goal like finding the cure in Africa or getting to Brazil it was going to China but Laurence has amnesia but now he's fine and we're in Japan going to China going to Russia. It was a little hard to keep up and because of all the plot movements there wasn't as much whitty dialogue from the dragons.
But really one disappointing book out of 8 so far is really not bad. I still love this series.
