This book was slow, dragged on and on, the “who” was painfully obvious from the beginning. It was sad, if anything, and it had juuust enough draw for me to finish it (skimming much of the end) just to see how it came together but honestly I did not like this book. Which was sad, because I did enjoy five total strangers .

this book was quite boring and it was so obvious who it was from the start
3/5
This was defiantly a chilling read. I had seen this on my local libraries "spotlight" YA books section so I decided to pick it up. It was different from other mystery books I have read in the past but it was refreshing.

Okay yes I liked this book. I like that each character played a role into that night. I’m very glad Declan was no longer alive. No twist is more annoying than the “they were alive all along!” Only Pretty Little Liars can do that. I wish the bond between the the characters was a more established. Like Jack did not need to be there with how it turned out. Kinda reminds me of Jack (funny name match up) in Dawson’s creek where once he was revealed to be gay he didn’t have much importance in the show. Back to the book, the book has the book of “each of the seven characters have a dirty secret” and while it’s fine to have a heroine, if you’re going to market 7 main characters, they all need pretty equal page time.
I predicted it was Valerie when it really was Bennett/Shawn, however Valerie did know I think basically everything. Aiden kinda played a part, like why show him a video portraying Declan’s death being covered up and not think it’s going to lead to a wicked revenge plot?? I don’t know, something about how Aiden and Valerie into the plot felt very jarring and unfinished.
While I’m not usually a fan of the evil sibling twist this one was okay. I like how they gave hints the entire time that Bennett was very intelligent and witty, and having him talk to Cleo every chapter or so, hinting to him being a big figure in the book.
I have conflicting Cleo feelings. Cleo is very brave and didn’t do a single thing wrong in regards to her relationship with Declan, but she doesn’t have much of a personality besides “must protect brother.” She sometimes showed glimpses of being determined, but I think almost all her defining characteristics were also shared by Hope.
I think Hope and Connor ended up being the most interesting, which is fair because they were the two leads after Cleo. I wish we could’ve seen more romance between them since it ended up being a big deal. Hope was very described, more than Cleo. Cleo was the narrator so while it’d be weird to talk about herself more than her best friend, I just don’t get much from Cleo besides her retelling. I’m glad Connor joined the investigation, I was nervous he’d just be the mysterious brother that just gave more answers at the end. He was more endearing in his protectiveness trait.
I think this book would make a great 10-12 episode limited series with each episode being clue based/adding more details of that night, something PLL did great with Allison’s night that had reveals that expanded throughout a couple of seasons. Even 13 reasons Why had the formula for the first season or something? (I didn’t watch more than the first few episodes of that show). The kitchen scene, nail file scene, the main accident scene, and the final climax pool fight scene I think were written very well and would translate well on scene.
So my only grievances with the book are character developments. Not that they didn’t have it, but still could’ve been cleaner or better executed. Familial love had a big role in this book which I’m not sure I liked. Nothing inherently wrong with that theme, but having three pairs of siblings in a character group is kind of heavy. Great motive for everyone’s actions, but cheesy at the same time. I do like when romance is part of a revenge plot, very tasty.
