I picked this book up while I was on a trip abroad because it felt fitting to my situation — I was, after all, a girl abroad.

At a different time in my life, I also moved to another country for a year. But here’s where the similarities end: I didn’t fall in love with every guy I laid eyes on. I made friends, immersed myself in the culture, explored the area, and actually made the most of the experience. That’s why I was disappointed that Abbey’s “year of independence” ended up revolving around two guys she supposedly fell in love with.

Not to mention, the book barely touched on the whole “oh no, my roommates are boys instead of girls” setup.

If it’s not already obvious, let me say it outright: you don’t seek independence just to make your entire world revolve around someone else. I was expecting more adventure, friendship, and growth but instead, we got a half-baked romance.

How can someone complain about living vicariously through her father, and then totally waste her shot at living for herself?
