I sat on my review of this one for a long time because I wasn't really sure what to say about it, and I'm still not totally sure to be honest.
I think maybe I would've liked it more if the author had put even more of her personal story in the book? Maybe? It said a lot of great stuff, but it's also almost all stuff I've heard before. I did like the Chicago focus since I am now living in Chicago again. But otherwise I'm not sure what I'll take away from this one.

Such an inspiring book. I felt the power of grass roots movements, the power that we that people truly can achieve. At times I had goosebumps, other times I was just taken aback at the power of the people. The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars is because I can’t figure out what I’d define it as. It’s not an autobiography, nor is it a how-to guide. Maybe it’s a bit of both?
It’s refreshing to dive back into Black feminist/queer literature. I wouldn’t say I gained any new knowledge, but definitely poignant reminders.
" This book is meant as a starting point from which to construct a working model for organizing " (p. 134) and you should read it that way. "Unapologetic" is a great introductory book on what is essential for radical movements, and what needs to be fought for in terms of organization. If you are an activist and organizer you might read this as a reminder of what is at stake and what needs to be prioritized within the movement. If you are interested in the topics but have never or rarely engaged in hands-on participation, this book sums up the most important aspects of it from a Black, Queer, and Feminist perspective. This book also includes bits of the author's own story as well as a short introduction to the history of organizing and radical movements in Chicago.

with a book containing such important and sensitive information, i was really hoping for a more streamlined and organized prose. the information in this, being difficult to consume and untangle, lends itself better to a less jumbled writing style. also, completely off topic but my copy was littered with editing errors, almost as if someone didn't care enough about this authors' work to actually commit to the editing process. i plan to revisit this work after some further education, but i can't help but feel like this book was a rush job.
