Really takes you through the individual trials that Darren has to face on the way to becoming a vampire. The book follows a very solid pace--training montage, trial, recovery, training montage, trial, recovery. (Then sequel hook, of course.) Very Hunger Games, before it ever existed. There's good character building in between all this, and everything just flows together naturally. Darren Shan really hits his stride with this one and for all the books moving forward, by finally not shying away from character death.

Darren's journey to Vampire Mountain was certainly not dull, and the adventure that takes place within is very exciting! Vampire Mountains and Trials of Death were my two favorites in the series the first time I read them, and they're definitely my favorites still.

Not only do we get to learn more about the vampires of this world, their government and laws and culture, we get to watch Darren test himself against the odds, to (hopefully) prove himself a worthy addition to the vampire race.

We meet cool new people, and we get to learn a few things about them--things that aren't so innocent or great! And it ends, as each book before this one, with a cliffhanger, begging you to continue on!

If you're a fan of vampires, you'll love Darren Shan's story! Also note: my 12 year old brother loves this series; he read all 12 books in less than a week!

Damn, I can't believe that they killed off one of my favorite characters, fuck. I also feel so bad for Darren during this book bc my boy goes THROUGH IT during the trials. Save him. :(

Okay. I might’ve thought this up too late, but because Darren’s a half vampire and he aged a fifth slower than regular humans, he’s been 13 for a decade now. Does that mean mentally he hasn’t grown either? He still takes in everything as a teenager? Because even the other vampires treat him as if he was a child. Would he not actually be an adult? Like I get to them he’d be a child in vampire years, but in human years he isnt. But yet he still acts so young.
