These books were some of my absolute FAVORITE when I was a kid, and I remember always liking this one the best. I haven’t read them in probably more than 10 years and picked this up on a whim this afternoon. And it’s still. So. Good. I think the rest of this series will be a re-read when I have more time this summer.

This book picks up right where the last book left off, Darren at Vampire mountain and now facing the trials of the Vampires. These trials are used to determine if a vampire has what it takes to be a vampire. If he fails, the outcome is death. Another fast paced book, with vivid details told from Darren's point of view. This way the reader learns more of the history and the ways of this group of people. Darren manages to survive the first three trials, but when the fourth one becomes dangerous, the little person jumps in without thinking to save his life. This is a major break of the rules and the generals meet to discuss his fate. Knowing death is the only solution, an up and coming vampire prince offers to help Darren escape. Only he is working agianst the vampires and helping the vampereze who are the enemies. Darren manages to flew only to land in a stream of fast water and then the book just says TO BE CONTUNIED>

I remember this being one of my favorites when I was a kid. Huge Goblet of Fire vibes.

My biggest gripe was some of the logic used…some of it felt faulty and purely done just to progress the plot.

Getting a bit tired of the telenovela huge cliff hanger endings. I guess that’s what a series is supposed to do to keep you reading? But it feels very…I can’t think of an apt word. Gimmicky? Childish? It’s a YA novel after all. Again, I’m not the target audience so I guess that makes sense I’m not totally in love.

Still throughly enjoyed it and can’t wait for the rest.

A sign of good childrens writing is when it holds up just as well for adults. Darren Shan's writing does exactly that. I last read this when I was 12, and now at 18 it still remains just as good.
