We humans don’t need mysteries to create conspiracy theories, but it sure helps. To that end, Jeff Wise has crafted a particularly believable one about the fate of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. You could argue that Wise, a licensed pilot and experienced writer, put a lot on the line by going public with such a radical theory, but there is a disquieting logic to his speculation. If you want a taste, here is his article for New York Magazine on the same topic. The bad thing about conspiracy theories is that in light of no evidence to the contrary, anything can seem plausible or even probable. With the dearth of actual facts about MH 370, the vacuum is ripe for alternate theories. This one is particularly well-researched, though it’s not for me to say whether that counts for much at all. Sadly, what we do know (perhaps the only thing we’ll ever know) is that there is a plane that disappeared with hundreds of people on board–and their families must feel unimaginable agony over the inexplicable loss and lack of concrete evidence. What a tragedy.

Let me tell you why this book...went from 5 to 1 star: it went from we never found it, it changed directions, while explaining that there is a big blind area when a plane can't be tracked, since the data was showing one direction, it went the other way.

Result? Russians Hijacked the plane...

I did not get the purpose of this..

Well presented. But as for this theory it's just the opening of The Dark Knight Rising.

This was a wonderful read. For the first time, I felt like someone very knowledgable provides me with all that's known about the wretched flight, explained very clearly and grippingly. It was so gripping, in fact, that I actually stayed up reading it at night, not being able to stop. On top of that, Wise weaves a plausible-sounding theory for what might have happened to the flight and its passengers. I've read some cut-throat critique on it, but I found the calculations sound, and the explanations well based on the known and accepted information. I'm now looking forward to reading Wise's earlier book, Extreme Fear. Whatever it is about, I'm sure it will be fascinating, and that Wise can turn even the phone book into an exciting read. Will continue following his writing.
